Following Greek Prime Minister’s Address to Joint Meeting of Congress, SFRC Approves Resolution Celebrating Enduring United States-Greece Partnership

U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, today issued the below statements following the Committee’s approval of their bipartisan resolution welcoming His Excellency Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, to the United States for an address to a joint meeting of Congress. The resolution was originally introduced concurrently with Representatives Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) and Michael McCaul (R-Texas), Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“As we told Prime Minister Mitsotakis during his visit to the U.S. Capitol: Greece will continue to have a stalwart friend and ally in the United States,” Chairman Menendez said. “The U.S.-Greece relationship is rooted in shared devotion to advancing democracy, shoring up energy and security partnerships, and safeguarding human rights worldwide. With this bipartisan resolution, we reaffirm yet again our commitment to continue growing that bond for generations to come.”

Turkey becomes magnet for Russians and Ukrainians alike – Nikkei Asia

It is just one sign of how Turkey’s strategy of positioning itself as something of a neutral zone is paying off. The country is attracting workers, money and business from both sides of the conflict — though not everyone is benefiting.

On the one hand, Turkey has supported Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict. Before the invasion, it sold armed drones to the country that have been used to inflict heavy damage on Russian forces. Shortly after the war started, it closed the Turkish Straits — the entry points to the strategically important Black Sea — to all navies and barred Russian military aircraft from its skies, effectively limiting Russia’s reinforcement options. All three countries have a border along the sea.

What does Greece’s involvement in the Ukraine War mean for Turkey? – Yeni Safak

Turkey was already fighting against the U.S. and European states in the Caucasus, in northern Iraq and Syria, in the East Mediterranean and in the Aegean, in Western Thrace, and in the Balkans. The northern shores of the Black Sea are among these too, now. Western countries’ opposition to Turkey’s stance in the Ukraine War cannot be considered an ordinary development.

PM Mitsotakis: I am not interested in a psychoanalysis of the Turkish political leadership – Proto Thema

“Greece listens to even the most absurd arguments with confidence. We deconstruct in a cold way, without outbursts, the internal arguments of Turkey. We will not resort to acridity and personal name-calling. Our self-confidence stems from the strong allies we have, our strong deterrent capacity, and the belief that we have justice on our side,” said Mr. Mitsotakis.

“I will not get involved in a game of personal characterisations with the Turkish president, I am not going to follow him. I do not intend to make a psychoanalytic or internal interpretation of the possible impasses of the Turkish political leadership. Their so-called arguments are deconstructed from our letter to the UN. We have no intention of entering into a verbal confrontation,” he said.

Germany to supply IFVs to Greece, Athens to deliver Soviet weapons to Kyiv – Scholz | Reuters

Germany will deliver infantry fighting vehicles (IFV) to Greece so that the government in Athens can pass on Soviet-style weapons to Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday.

“We will provide Greece with German infantry fighting vehicles,” he told reporters after a two-day EU summit in Brussels, adding he had struck an agreement with the Greek prime minister.

Scholz didn’t give any details as to what kind of infantry fighting vehicles Berlin will hand over to Greece – or what kind of weapons Athens will pass on to Kyiv.
